Rutt’s Hut

In the heart of Clifton, New Jersey, lies a culinary gem that has been delighting locals and visitors alike for nearly a century—Rutt’s Hut. Known for its unique deep-fried hot dogs, affectionately called “Rippers,” Rutt’s Hut is more than just a restaurant; it’s a beloved institution with a rich history and a loyal following.

Rutt’s Hut holds a special place in my heart. My family have been coming here since its inception. Every visit is a nostalgic journey, reminding me of the simple joys of a perfectly cooked hot dog and the welcoming atmosphere that Rutt’s Hut offers.

Rutt’s Hut was established in 1928 by Royal “Abe” Rutt and his wife, Anna. Over the years, it has become famous for its deep-fried hot dogs, which are cooked until the casing cracks and splits, giving them the nickname "Rippers". The restaurant has been featured on numerous food shows and has earned a spot in the book "1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die".

The star of the menu at Rutt’s Hut is undoubtedly the Ripper. You can also try the “In-And-Out” style, where the hot dog is briefly dipped in hot oil, or the “Cremator,” which is charred black for a more intense flavor1. Don’t miss out on their famous relish, a secret blend of mustard and spices that perfectly complements the hot dogs. My personal favorite is the classic Ripper with a generous helping of relish and a side of crispy fries.

Rutt’s Hut exudes a no-frills, old-school charm. The interior is divided into three sections: a restaurant, a bar, and a take-out counter. The casual, laid-back vibe makes it the perfect spot to enjoy a meal with friends or family. The walls are adorned with vintage photos and memorabilia, adding to the nostalgic feel of the place.
