Comedian, Bob Hope, playfully challenges the law for men to wear bathing tops. The reason for this law is because they didn’t want it to look as if there were “gorillas on our beaches”. It wasn’t until 1937 that men would sport the infamous swim trunks and no shirt look at summer beach events.

William S. Gilbert of Trenton had business cards printed that read: “William S. Gilbert, Contracting Executioner”. He sent them to state prisons around the country, asking he be given the job of executing murderers that were sentenced to death. By 1929 he killed 56 men and 2 women.

“The Great Manta”, that was caught in Brielle, NJ by Captain A.L. Kahn, in August of 1933. This huge ray was reported to have weighed over 5,000 pounds and over 20 feet long. It tangled itself on the ships lines and was then hoisted to shore in a travel lift.

The Long Branch boardwalk fire of 1987. Going back over 160 years Long Branch had a pier on the Atlantic coast five in total since 1828. All are ancient history now. It burned due to a gas leak and electrical fire.

Former Miss New Jersey 1944, Janice Drake, victim of a mob hit in 1959. The motive behind the murder was unclear, but it was widely speculated to be connected to organized crime activities. The case remains unsolved, with no arrests ever made in connection with her death.
